French Cornbread or Muffins

1/4 c Sugar
1/2 c Shortening
2 Eggs
1 c Milk
1 1/2 c Flour
1/2 c Cornmeal
3 ts Baking powder
1/4 ts Salt

Cream together sugar, shortening, and eggs. Add remaining ingredients and beat until smooth. Drop by spoonfuls into a muffin tin or spread into an 8 or 9 inch square baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees until golden brown, approximately 35 minutes.

Makes 9 squares.
